Hi everyone.
Just a quick one, you will see some of my sump in the photo when you click on the link below. The pads are nice and white. The guy in my lfs told me i'd never have to do anything with the pads, they are brown and a bit smelly.

Do I need new ones ? do they need to be replaced every few months.

Just thought i'd post this as my nitrates have been high lately, 20 - 40ppm i think. I bought a polypad and some carbon and put it in the sump to reduce the nitrates.

Really these should be cleaned in tap water weekly and replaced when they get grotty. When you clean them in tap water it kills all the nitrate generating bacteria but you dont want to add chlorinated water that might be trapped in the floss back to your tank so follow the cleaning with a good rinse in the old tank water.
